Hi, I’m Carl.

I am a husband, a father of two young boys, an organic farmer, and a market gardening consultant. I am a member of the Toronto Urban Growers (TUG), the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario (EFAO), the Organic Council of Ontario (OCO), and the Canadian Organic Growers (COG). The farm is certified organic by Ecocert Canada.

Before starting Crooked Cucumber Family Garden in 2014, I spent a year on an organic vegetable farm in California, and 6 years working on large CSA’s just north of Toronto, including 4 years as farm manager. Before that I worked on organic gardens in British Columbia, New Mexico, and Nova Scotia, participated in urban community garden projects in Kingston and Montreal, and volunteered on organic farms in India. In total, I have over 15 years growing experience. You can find out more about my past experience by checking me out on LinkedIn.

I love growing vegetables. It feels good out there in the field with the plants, soil, sun and rain. It’s amazing that a tiny seed grows into something beautiful and delicious!

Many years ago I was converted to broccoli when I picked some and ate it raw at dawn in the Salt Spring Island mist. I already loved beans – ever since I picked them in the late afternoon and brought them into the kitchen for dinner at my grandparents’ in rural Quebec. I can also remember eating juicy and sweet tomatoes still warm from the sun that my dad grew in our home garden in Kingston.

It is these kinds of authentically fresh and undeniably fabulous vegetables that I love to eat and to offer.

In addition to running the Crooked Cucumber Family Garden, I also operate Crooked Cucumber Consulting, offering services to farmers growing or seeking to grow between 1/4 acre to 10 acres of vegetables. I consult, teach, and train organic farmers seeking to improve their planning and production systems.

You are welcome to subscribe to my monthly email newsletter and/or follow the farm on FacebookInstagram or Twitter.
